Tom Eckerle is the Michigan politician and Leelanau County street commissioner, in 2018 he was chosen as the road commissioner. Lately, he used the n-word at a public meeting and blamed that the Black community for dispersing the COVID-19 virus.
Since then, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and other officials called for his resignation, Tom created this racist remark before a public assembly and it had been overheard by a reporter.
He said, QUOTE"I can say whatever I want," and the altercation appeared on Tuesday after an official asked Eckerle, who had been elected road commissioner at 2018, why he was not wearing a mask for those proceedings.
In response to this, Tom started simplifying the Black Lives Issue motion, asserting"this whole issue is due to them [expletive] in Detroit." Initially, he refused to resign but on August 7th he told Leelanau County Administrator Chet Janik that he would step down.
What triggered Tom to use a racial slur, when another commissioner asked Tom why he wasn't wearing a mask, Tom replied:"Well, this whole issue is because of the n****** down in Detroit." What's more, Commission Chairman Bob Joyce rebuked Eckerle and said"You can not say that."
Tom replied"I will say anything I need.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer wrote on Twitter"Now I announced racism for a public health catastrophe in Michigan and established the Black Leadership Advisory Council. #COVID19 has highlighted what Black & Brown communities have always known -- inequities caused by systemic racism could be deadly. We are facing this "
Whitmer, a Democrat, also requested Eckerle to step down over his use of the slur"Governor Whitmer considers that Road Commissioner Tom Eckerle should resign immediately.
We will not tolerate any sort of racism in our assembly room or our organization. This behavior has had a serious impact on our exceptional Road Commission, and we are requesting that you resign immediately."
Change.Org Petition launched to eliminate Tom Eckerle, Leelanau County Road Commissioner.

The page reads"After talking with different individuals in the district today, I must say that I'm shocked and disappointed to hear of those comments which were made from Leelanau County Road Commissioner Tom Eckerle prior to a recent street commission meeting. I phoned Mr. Eckerle to confirm he made these comments. He affirmed that he did. This sort of racial slur is flat-out unacceptable and ignorant. I requested Mr. Eckerle to resign his position as road commissioner in light of those comments and shall he refuse, the citizens of Leelanau County have every right to recall him from office," O'Malley said. "It saddens me to have to even make this statement."
